My favourite resources: July – September 2024
It’s been a super busy (and exciting time) this last little while as I’ve been over to the Oxford and Bucharest for some professional development conferences. The one in Oxford was huge event (click HERE for more info) where I got to spend the first day doing an ‘Immersion Day’ with Dr Richard (Dick) Schwartz (the Internal Family Systems guy), along with sessions on the following days with guru’s like Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, Dr. Dan Siegel, Dr. Janina Fisher, Linda Thai, and Dr. Rangan Chatterjee. Its was quite incredible. Then I travelled over to Bucharest for the Compassionate Inquiry ‘Confluence 2024’ conference which was hosted by Dr. Gabor Maté and Sat Dharam Kaur. The trip provided me with LOTS of new ideas and ways of supporting clients…it did mean though I didn’t have chance to keep up to date with the blog / social media for the last two weeks – apologies.
Anyway, getting to the point of this week’s blog and the thing that is at the core of everything I share on here: I really want it to be a useful space where people can find all sorts of therapeutically relevant information, mixed up with a good dollop of personal reflections and ramblings with a sprinkling of humour for good measure. I also want it to be a place where you can find links to all the resources that I share with clients, things that I think have strong therapeutic merit or that are innovative and really want people to see. It also gives you an insight into me, what I believe in, how I practice, and I hope it helps to provide some tangible illustrations of my core values (and those of the whole team at TBW): authenticity, curiosity, integrity, openness, and respect. NOTE: the trip away provided me with some time for reflection and an opportunity to review my core values – more on that later!
Therapy isn’t just about what happens in session. I’m all about being creative with therapy – that’s what the whole ‘therapy. done differently’ is about. I believe that therapy can also come in the form of blogs, podcasts, books and conversations with other people who are important to your healing.
So here are some of my favourite blogs, websites, books, apps etc. that I’ve been devouring – would love to hear what you think of them and hear what you’ve been busy enjoying as I’m always on the lookout for inspiration!
Podcasts / YouTube interviews:
I’m down a deep podcast rabbit hole at the moment so I’m going to share a few of my favourites lately:
- Steven Bartlett (DOAC) – Prof Andrew Huberman
- Steven Bartlett (DOAC) – Simon Sinek
- Steven Bartlett (DOAC) – Dr Ramani Durvasula: The Narcissism Doctor
- The Imperfects – Maria Ruberto: Advancing despite adversity
- The Imperfects – Another imperfect chat about men
- The Imperfects – Dr Emily: What are your values?
I’ve been interviewed on one podcast this quarter:
- Lynda Lovatt Lady Talk Podcast: ‘Past trauma matters for midlife women’
And, I was also interviewed as part of a project funded by the Victorian Department of Health around women’s pain. Here’s a link to the promotional trailer that was launched a few weeks back, I’ll share the full interview once it’s live.
Books:
I’ve managed only a few books this quarter between all the travel and the research as part of my PhD but these are some of my non-fiction fave’s over the last three months:
- Perimenopause Power by Maisie Hill
- Working with the Developmental Trauma of Childhood Neglect by Ruth Cohn
- Unburdened Eating: Healing Your Relationships with Food and Your Body Using an Internal Family Systems by Jeanne Catanzaro
Apps:
I haven’t found any new ones lately that I’m loving – would LOVE any ideas from you all J
Here’s a reminder of the support services that are available 24/7 because therapy isn’t for everyone, it’s not available 24/7 and our challenges don’t always fit neatly into our therapy sessions (if we do therapy):
- Beyond Blue – 1300 22 46 36
- Lifeline – 13 11 14
- Kids Helpline – 1800 55 18 00
- Suicide Call Back Service – 1300 659 467
- MensLine – 1300 78 99 78
