ABOUT THEA

Thea Baker Wellbeing started as a baby private practice, that I always thought was going to be a ‘one-person-band’ kind of practice. Just me, doing my thing. I had no intention of it growing into a multi-therapist practice operating from two sites, but things have definitely changed over the last few years, and I’m thrilled that we are able to support more people navigate their trauma, attachment wounds and other life challenges. Each of the therapists that work at Thea Baker Wellbeing (TBW for short) share the same ethos around our approach to client-case, how we collaborate with our clients, and we all work from a bottom-up, trauma-informed lens to therapy. You can read more about the different members of the team on the ‘Meet the Team’ page but here’s more about me and why TBW works the way it does:

I am a counsellor and body-based (somatic) psychotherapist with special interests in all aspects women’s health, trauma (PTSD, C-PTSD) and couples / relationship therapy. I work collaboratively with my clients to find a place of healing and recovery. I am in it for the long-haul and don’t give up easily. I am not the kind of therapist that is ok with “feeling better” if better is still a long way off being truly well.

That’s why I feel such an affinity with the word ‘wellbeing’. Wellbeing is about much more than the absence of disease or illness. It’s a multidimensional mix of getting your physical, mental, emotional and social health in balance.

I am a noisy advocate about mental health being a part of whole-person health – I believe that we have somehow got into a place where we see physical health in terms of strength and fitness whilst mental health is viewed through a lens of stigma, dysfunction and illness. I work tirelessly to address this imbalance. I started my work in the health and wellbeing space as a specialist Personal Trainer working with women at all ages and stages of life and learned early the profoundly simple connection between our physical and mental state of health. Now I combine that knowledge of anatomy and physiology with my research of how trauma is stored in the body using all sorts of creative approaches to therapy.

I relish in what many therapists see as ‘complex’ – trauma, attachment wounds, adjustment issues and relationship challenges. When clients have been told they are “too difficult” I believe that a fresh pair of eyes, with a broader perspective and a good dollop of collaboration with other specialists is in order – whether that’s psychiatrists, GPS, dieticians, nutritionists, naturopaths, integrative medicine practitioners or bodyworkers – I’m a huge fan of working with others to bring about whole-person healing. I am also a passionate educator and speaker and love opportunities to work with small professional groups as well as larger presentations within the health and wellbeing industry. Find out more about my speaking engagements here.

When I’m not in my therapy room:

I’m the Mummy to a funky Brady-Bunch family of 5 teenagers and two miniature dachshunds named Geoff and Garry (who sometimes rock up to join us in therapy). I was born on a tiny island in the Caribbean, lived in England for 20+ years and have called Australia home now for more than 11 and am blessed to have friends and family all over this wonderful world. I’ve been a competitive swimmer, hanging up my goggles after a hip replacement a few years ago (yes, I know, too young for that) but I still love water and still find lots of laps deeply meditative. I love to read and have a self-diagnosed book-buying addiction. I’m in the process of figuring out how to squeeze a PhD into my life – I love to learn, and curiosity is a constant hum in my life.
